Far North Police are appealing for the public's help in tracking down a vehicle that left the scene of a fatal accident last night.

The incident occurred State Highway 12 near the rural settlement of Whirinaki.

A 45-year-old man was discovered lying beside the highway at about 8.45pm last night.

He had suffered significant head trauma and died a short time later despite the efforts of members of the public and paramedics.

While no vehicle was seen, police believe the injuries and scene are consistent with the deceased having been struck by a motorist travelling towards Opononi.

A post mortem examination has been scheduled for Thursday morning.

The victim's name has not been released yet as police are still contacting some members of his family.

Police say they are hoping the public may be able to assist by reporting any suspicious behaviour regarding recently damaged vehicles.

Anybody who travelling in the area on Tuesday night is also asked to contact Kaikohe Police on 09 4052960.
