Police are investigating the death of a man in Hamilton during a party early on Thursday.
A cordon has been set up and scene examinations are underway at the Bellmont Avenue address, in the suburb of Chartwell.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel Keall says officers were called to the site at about 1.30am.
"At this stage it appears there has been a drinking session in the garage of the address with a number of people attending," he says.
"The 28-year-old occupier of the home and a male friend became involved in a confrontation with a group of men in the driveway during which our victim suffered a fatal head injury to the side of the head."
It's believed a weapon was used.
Police say the victim was repeatedly kicked after he fell to the ground and the other man was injured when he tried to help.
Keall says a focus of the scene examination is recovering the weapon, while the inquiry team is trying to identify those at the party.
