One man is believed dead after a car hit a tree at Tihiroa, 12km north of Otorohanga, on Tuesday night.

The crash happened sometime after 7pm and a police northern communications spokesman said there was only one vehicle involved, with one occupant who had died.

Emergency services were in attendance.
