A 27-year-old west Auckland man has been arrested today after an elderly man was left critically injured following an attack in Auckland today.

Police said the attack, which happened just before 8am on Carrington Rd in Mt Albert, was seen by dozens of intermediate-aged school children waiting at a bus stop.

Police say the alleged offender was a Unitec student and want to hear from anyone who witnessed the attack.

Police say the attack occurred after a "minor crash" between the van and a BMW.

The van driver has been taken to Auckland Hospital, where his condition is described as critical.

The man is to appear in Auckland District Court Wednesday.
