A search has been launched for a man and two children missing in Northland's Mangamuka Forest as severe weather batters the area.

Police say the 40-year-old man and children, aged 13 and seven, went into the bush for a day hike in the Omahuta Forrest on Friday and were due out late that night.

The Forrest is part of the wider Mangamuka Ranges south of Kaitaia.

Family had searched for the group for some time before contacting police on Saturday evening.

Their vehicle has since been located on Blackridge road, in the Omahuta Forrest.

The trio are only clad in clothing sufficient for a day hike. They have no food or other supplies.

Severe weather in the area was hampering search and rescue efforts on Saturday evening, police say.

The far North Search and Rescue Squad is currently preparing to commence a full scale search of the area at first light.
