Christchurch has been shaken by a magnitude five earthquake, the largest of several tremors recorded overnight.
The magnitude 5 aftershock struck at 2.47am, centred 10 kilometres east of Christchurch at a depth of 9 kilometres.
GNS Science says the quake was felt in Canterbury.
Police say they have had no reports of further damage in the city or injuries.
It was followed at 4.11am by a magnitude 3.1 quake centred in the same area and 6km deep.
Then at 5.10am a 3.7 quake was recorded 20 kilometres north east of Christchurch at a depth of 7 km.
A magnitude 3.3 quake was recorded at 7.05 am in the same location as the magnitude 5 tremor earlier in the morning, followed by a 3.5 jolt at 7.48am.
A magnitude 3.5 tremor felt at 10.28am was located 10 kilometres south west of Christchurch at a depth of six kilometres.
Three quakes were recorded yesterday of magnitude 3.6, 2.9 and 3.3.
The city has been hit by numerous aftershocks since large tremors on December 23 and January 2.
The biggest of these tremors measured 6 on the Richter scale on December 23.
They follow the deadly quake in February 2011 and the damaging event in September 2010.
