The practice of using glue-covered sticky boards as a way to catch rodents is on the way out.

After years of complaints from lobbyists, MAF Biosecurity has agreed glueboards are cruel.

Rats and mice walking onto the traps get stuck by their feet, and die a lingering and painful death.

MAF's director of Animal Welfare, David Bayvel, says people who use the boards will need to find more humane methods.

Use of them will also be phased out in food preparation areas, where chemicals are not allowed.

Bayvel says pest control operators and DOC staff working near some pest-free islands, can keep using the boards until 2014.
