Lower South Island rattled by 4.6 quake

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake has been felt at the bottom of the South Island tonight.

It struck 160 kilometres west of Tuatapere, north west of Invercargill, at 7.40pm at a depth of 33 kilometres.

The quake was followed by a 3.7 magnitude earthquake that struck within 5km of Lyttelton at a depth of eight kilometres.

This was felt as far north as Wellington, and was described in Lyttelton as a strong quake.
