A mattress of ponga fronds, the call of weka and kiwi and the company of his fox terrier helped a 15-year-old hunter make it through a freezing night lost in bush north of Gisborne.
Antonio Barbarich-Waikari has been hunting with his father, Joe Waikari, since he was aged four. The knowledge he has gleaned over the past 11 years helped the Gisborne Boys' High pupil make the right decisions when he found himself lost on Sunday afternoon.
He was one of six people rescued after spending a night in the snow as bad weather hampered hunting or tramping trips.
Two Christchurch trampers were rescued from Canterbury's high country after being stuck for three days. They spent one night outside in freezing conditions, sharing a sleeping bag when a two-night trip became five because of heavy snow.
Sally Botur, 61, said she and husband Chris, 59, felt embarrassed but were pleased to be home after being picked up by a search and rescue helicopter about 10am yesterday. "We've done winter tramps before and had no problems, so this really took us by surprise," she said.
In Gisborne, Antonio became separated from his party after Mindy picked up a scent. A group of 20 locals and family members searched on Sunday night and yesterday. His parents found him about 7.45am yesterday.
Three other men spent Sunday night outdoors after becoming lost while hunting pigs in the Onamalutu Valley in Marlborough.
