Lorelei Mason is the ONE News Health Correspondent based in
Christchurch.
She has won an impressive eight Qantas Media Awards
during her time on ONE News, including twice being awarded News
Reporter of the Year, in 2005 and 2002. She has also won several
awards in Australia for medical stories featured on ONE News.
She began her journalism career at The Press in Christchurch after
leaving university. Since then she has reported for the BBC
televisioin and radio, Radio New Zealand, Newstalk ZB and 3ZB in
Christchurch.
Lorelei says she loves reporting on health for many reasons,
"It is a sometimes complex area, but one of high-interest and relevance for all viewers. I see it as my personal responsibility to present stories which give New Zealanders a fair and accurate picture of their health system, what is delivering and what isn't, how they stand to gain or lose, as well as presenting stories which showcase the latest in medical research."
There are also human issues behind the system she is focused on covering.
"Behind every health story -no matter how complicated, political or dry it may appear on the surface- is a human element, someone who is affected. I am continually challenged and surprised by health reporting. Getting the chance to report on people's struggles with illness and disability, or see them benefiting from some new medical technique, is an absolute privilege."
Lorelei has three children.
