Dairies and small shops may soon face the prospect of not being able to sell alcohol but a south Auckland community wants the rules to go even further.
The community said with 502 licenses already in Manukau, their area is over the limit when it comes to liquor stores.
Around 100 people rallied today to protest liquor licensing laws, angry over a decision which saw a fruit and vegetable shop converted to a bottle shop.
A recent Christchurch High Court decision banned Victoria Night 'n Day Foodstore from renewing its license to sell liquor. The ruling could set a precedent for other small shops around the country.
Today, protesters are calling for a change to the liquor licensing law, to allow locals to have a say in licensing decisions in their area and when it has reached its liquor limit.
Local community leaders said licence for the new bottle shop in
the area was sneaked through and they were not made aware of it
until too late.
