Two of Wellington Zoo's African lions are off on a bit of a romantic holiday.

Four-year-olds Malik and Zulu, who are both males, have yet to master the art of mating - so they are being sent to Christchurch's Orana Wildlife Park to find out how it is done.

Lion keeper Linda Cook says they are both lovely big boys, and the instinct will undoubtedly kick in when the time comes.

The pair came to Wellington Zoo from Auckland Zoo in 2004 as four-month old cubs.
