The life on the other side of the poppy box can be a dangerous affair.

Last year, someone tried to steal Vietnamese veteran Stan Green's collection box. But Stan stopped him in his tracks.

"I jumped on him and he got caught by the police... he didn't get far."

"I didn't think I had it in me, but I did," Stan told ONE News.

Although war seems like a long time ago for Stan, he is happy to see that a lot of people still remember.

One person's grandfather went to war, while another's best friend is in the army: two reasons among many why people say they buy poppies from volunteers like Stan each year for Anzac Day.

But the number one rule, according to Stan, is that all poppies should be gifted. They are free, whether you donate or not, he says.

Just another way to remember the brave soldiers who fought for New Zealand, on Anzac Day.
