The police investigation into the murder of Liberty Templeman
will continue over the weekend, despite the arrest of a
teenager.
The 15-year-old girl's body was found in an orchard last
Sunday.
A 14 year-old boy appeared in the Kaikohe Youth Court on Friday afternoon accused of Liberty's murder. He has also been charged with indecent assault. Police have confirmed that the youth was known to Liberty.
He has been remanded to the custody of Child, Youth and Family and will reappear in court on November 17.
However, Far North police area commander Inspector Chris Scahill says the investigation is far from over.
He says his staff will be working on the case well into next week.
Scahill says police and Libby's family have been
overwhelmed by the level of local support and that there is still
work to do on the investigation and questions to be resolved,
including trying to find Libby's five or six-year-old Nokia
cellphone, which has a cracked screen.
He says police who have worked on the case so far will be
attending Libby's funeral in Kerikeri on Saturday.
Hundreds of people are expected to farewell the teenager in Kerikeri. Scahill says the family are hugely relieved at the arrest, and they can now focus on the funeral.
Funeral Director Anthony Kiely says her family want the service to be uplifting for everyone.
Libby's casket is painted her favourite burnt orange colour, and people attending the funeral have been asked to dress in bright colours.
