A Levin piggery has been cleared of any animal welfare breaches following a MAF investigation.
Controversy erupted after TVNZ's Sunday programme aired footage of an animal welfare organisation break-in at the piggery.
Activists claimed the pigs were unable to move and obviously in distress - but the owner claimed the intruders purposely stirred the animals up.
The MAF inspectors included a vet who visited the Levin piggery on May the 19th.
The vet concludes the standard of care at the piggery is very high, and sow stalls have been upgraded since his earlier visit.
The vet says when he first saw the pigs they were resting quietly and showed no signs to support claims of distress.
MAF Deputy Director General, Larry Fergusson, says they don't know whether that distress in TV footage could have been caused by animal welfare activists shining lights on the animals after they broke in in the middle of the night.
Fergusson says the matter for MAF is now closed.
