A Levin man being arrested by police has collapsed and died, sparking an independent probe.
Police said they were called to an address in Bristol Street, Levin at 6.30pm to deal with a disorderly behaviour complaint.
After speaking to the complainant, two officers attended a nearby address to speak to the alleged offender.
They spoke to a man in his 60s and told him he was going to be arrested, at which point he collapsed, police said.
The officers called for an ambulance and placed the man into the recovery position but his condition deteriorated. Ambulance staff attempted to resuscitate him but failed.
The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints and an autopsy will be carried out to establish the cause of his death.
Police said the man would not be named until next of kin had been notified.
