Around 200 lecturing staff at Manukau Institute of Technology are taking industrial action over workloads they claim are unrealistic due to high student numbers.
Around 200 teaching staff are striking on Tuesday following unsuccessful negotiations with polytech management.
Tertiary Education Union spokeswoman Chan Dixon says MIT lecturing staff have some of the highest workloads in the polytech sector.
She says a contributing factor is the number of people returning to study as a result of the economic downturn.
She says the high numbers are resulting in even more work for lecturers.
Dixon says staff are rejecting proposals which would result in varied hours at unsociable times.
