Auckland's Lantern Festival kicks off tonight to celebrate the new Year of the Dragon.

The highly anticipated celebration of Chinese New Year held in Albert Park each year, will run from February 3 to February 5.

With foodstalls, picnics, dragon and lion dance groups and a reggae band Chinese-style from Beijing this event is normally packed out.

It starts at 5pm and will run over the next three nights.

In Chinese folklore the dragon is respected and revered and it is one of the most auspicious of the zodiac signs.
