The hot weather has definitely arrived but while many are enjoying a break from work, others wait until later in the summer when they say the weather is more reliable.

Clare Fussell works in an office like thousands of other Kiwis, but while most are currently sunning themselves on the closest beach, she has been hard at work.

"It's peaceful and quiet, I can get lots done, the roads are less clogged, it's great," she says.

She's taking her break later in the month to make the most of quieter holiday spots and more sun.

"The weather's usually better come the end of January, February. It's much more settled," she says.

And she's got good reason to feel that way. Apart from this year, most Christmases since the millennium have been plagued by bad weather around the country.

But will late holidayers like Fussell get their post-Christmas sun this summer?

"We're expecting a La Nina end to the summer, I guess, and that means more winds from the north. So warmer air coming down from the tropical latitudes, generally above average temps in most places, says James Renwick, Niwa principal scientist.

While it will be drier in the south, higher than normal rainfall is predicted for the North Island, definitely good news for East Coast farmers who are dealing with parched pastures and low water levels after a dry spring.

And the warmer temperatures mean there will be lots more days like Thursday.

But while you contemplate how to extend your vacation, spare a thought for those who are back at work, albeit dreaming of the sun.

"For me lying under an umbrella reading a book is mostly what I would like to be doing one way or another," says Fussell.

The La Nina means hopefully there will be lots of time to do that between now and March.
