Two New Zealanders have been rescued after the yacht they were on sank when it hit a reef in Fiji today.
The 14 metre yacht Touche hit a reef approximately 42 kilometres east of Savusavu harbour, at the entrance to Samosamo Strait, Fiji at around midday, Maritime New Zealand said.
Search and Rescue Officer Kevin Banaghan said a 59-year-old man from Great Barrier Island and a 53-year-old woman from Tauranga were rescued after abandoning the New Zealand registered yacht and activating their emergency radio beacon.
On receiving the distress signal, the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand advised the Fiji Rescue Coordination Centre, which sent a tug and rescued the pair at about 2pm (NZT).
Banaghan said both are safe and well.
