A New Zealand couple arrested in India after allegedly being caught with cannabis have been freed on bail.

Indian police told the Dominion Post Allan Bruce Mills and Peta Sim Clair were carrying 96 grams of cannabis in the Bhuntar region, and area known for cannabis cultivation.

India has strict drug laws, with penalties of up to 10 years jail for people caught with even a few grams of marijuana.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington said New Zealand's High Commission in New Delhi had made contact with the couple, but they had declined offers of help.
