Two New Zealanders arrested in India after allegedly being caught with cannabis have declined help from New Zealand diplomats in the country.

The pair, a man and a woman, were arrested in Bhuntar, an area well-known for marijuana cultivation.

Authorities allege the New Zealanders were carrying 96 grams of cannabis.

India has strict drug laws, with penalties of up to 10 years jail for people caught with even a few grams of marijuana.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington says New Zealand's High Commission in New Delhi has been informed of the situation and has made contact with local authorities.

Diplomats have made contact with the man and the woman, but they have declined offers of help.
