A Kiwi "stowaway" on board a yacht making an unauthorised trip in Antarctica says he is ashamed to be a New Zealander after getting a cold shoulder from Scott Base.
Busby Noble told ONE News he is a willing volunteer in a Norwegian adventurer's mission to the continent, but was furious when Scott Base staff refused to offer the team any hospitality.
"I'm totally disappointed in our countrymen for being so cruel and nasty to our vessel," he said.
"I can't look my crew mates in the eyes because of what New Zealand has done to our supplies, and I don't feel very comfortable knowing my countrymen never put out a friendly hand or gave us a cup of water."
Adventurer Jarle Andhoy's yacht was spotted within 10 kilometres of the base on Ross Island yesterday.
But staff told ONE News they were under orders not to provide him with a bed.
The explorer has been warned he does not have permission to be on the ice but he says he is trying to retrieve cargo from a vessel he lost a year ago during a storm.
Some of that cargo is still at Scott Base.
Noble said he and Andhoy are now sailing back through the ice to open waters where he hopes a friendlier country will offer its support.
He said they have enough supplies for about two weeks.
"We have about two meals a day, I've just had my first piece of toast which is a little bit old but it's edible. After my watch tonight I'll have another meal, as it were, hopefully with a few more ingredients on it.
"In terms of our fuel I know there's nothing left in the drums on the deck."
The boat is now believed to be heading to Cape Horn on the southern tip of Argentina, where Noble plans to try to get a temporary passport to get back to New Zealand.
