A Kiwi stowaway claims he never wanted to join an unauthorised trip to Antarctica but fell asleep on the vessel.

Aucklander Busby Noble is days away from reaching the McMurdo Sound on-board the boat lead by a Norwegian captain who headed a fatal Antarctic expedition last year.

Busby told ONE News Captain Jarle Andhoy was not aware he was on board when the boat left Auckland last month.

"The Captain didn't know I was up there and when I woke up I didn't want to jeopordise their endeavours.

"I didn't want to be on the trip, I didn't want to be in these conditions. I don't see how anybody else would want to either," said Busby.

In February last year Andhoey and a companion were crossing the ice in Antarctica on quad bikes when their support yacht Beserk sank in a storm with three crew members on board.

Andhoy claims he is returning to Antarctica to find any wreckage left behind after the boat sank.

"I think people can judge as they want," he told ONE News.

"The most important thing for me on this expedition is to find out what happened to the Beserk," said Andhoy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is considering legal action against the rogue adventurer as he failed to fill in the correct paperwork and gain authorisation before leaving New Zealand.

He could face fines of up to $100,000.
