Marcescent is a word New Zealand Champion speller Christopher Jury will never forget.
It tripped him up at the Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington DC.
The 13-year-old Hamilton Boys' student missed one C and used a wrong vowel trying for what was his second word on stage.
Christopher says he is disappointed but has no regrets.
Marcescent (pronounced mahr-ses-uhnt) is an adjective meaning, withering but not falling off, as part of a plant.
