A group of Kiwi scientists are enduring some of the worst conditions on earth, trying to find signs of life.

They have set up camp in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, a water free wasteland where the wind chill can reach -100 degrees.

The valley is one of the driest places on earth, with bare slopes and a distant glacier it could be the surface of Mars.

"It is just like a different planet," says scientist Jeroen Brijs.

To the naked eye the only sign of life in the area is death. Mummified seals are scattered throughout the Dry Valleys.

They are blasted by the wind and the dirt and they could be anywhere between three and a thousand years old.

However Brijs and the other scientists have found a community of bacteria and fungi living in the soil.
