A New Zealand teenager has been rescued after the sailing ship she was on sank 500 kilometres off the coast of Brazil.

Mei Rose Barry, who is from Auckland, spent 18 hours clinging to a life raft along with dozens of other students before being rescued by the Brazilian Navy.

The Kiwi was on the three masted SV Concordia as part of a five month voyage that allows students in their first year of college to study while sailing around the world.

The Concordia was caught in high winds and heavy seas when it sunk.

All 64 people on board the ship were rescued.
