A dog that is bred for fighting has been banned in New Zealand.

The Presa Canario has killed people in the United States and is already banned in Australia.

It is used in the Canary Islands for fighting.

Local Government Minister Rodney Hide said the move to ban it is a pre-emptive strike, as none of the dogs are in New Zealand yet.

He said the dog, which is ferociously strong and has a jaw on it that looks like a shark, has a tendency to exhibit aggressive behaviour or attack.

The size and strength of the breed makes it of particular concern because of the seriousness of the injuries it can inflict, Hide said.

The measure does not affect the review of public safety around dogs that is ongoing.
