A vision of what a new New Zealand flag should look like, as doodled by prime minister John Key, has raised $10,150 for charity in an online auction.
Key was asked to draw his version of an alternative flag for New Zealand by TVNZ's Breakfast presenter Pippa Wetzell after calls for a new flag were made over Waitangi Day .
By the time the programme went off-air TVNZ had already received a pledge of $1,000 for the drawing.
Key then gave his consent for the drawing to be auctioned for charity and it was listed on Trade Me with all proceeds going to Cure Kids.
You can see the prime minister creating his doodle below.
The A4 drawing will be mounted and framed and Key has also agreed to host the winning bidder for morning tea.
Key described his drawing as a "silver fern". Wetzell said it
looked more like a "lop-
sided Christmas tree".
What do you think of John Key's version of a new flag for New Zealand? Do we even need a new flag? Leave your comments on the messageboard below

I think that changing our flag must come at the time that we become a republic. That time is not now though! Once that happens the Treaty of Waitangi will only be history, & we can move away from both the Union Jack & Tino Rangatiratanga flags. These represent only part of our society, as does the silver fern which should keep being used for our sportsmen/women.

Hey it's a flag about Momma Shark & Baby Shark. Ah well I guess we're a maritime nation..and we do have lots of predators....
