Police say a key may help solve the Mt Ruapehu arson mystery

Police investigating the multi-million dollar attack on the Knoll Ridge cafe at the skifield in February have unearthed what they think may be a crucial piece of evidence.

It is a key engraved with the numbers 474564.

Detective Chris Chapman says the key relates to a person of interest in the inquiry, and identifying what it opens could help confirm his involvement or eliminate him from the inquiry.

He is being vague on further details so as not to jeopardise the investigation.

The numbers on the key relate to the depths of the cuts on it, but it's unusual to have them engraved on the key itself.

Police are speculating it may belong to a storage facility, bach or house, possibly in the central North Island region.
