Kawerau in the Bay of Plenty is set to lose two of its primary schools, but will gain a Maori immersion school.
Kawerau North, Kawerau Central and Putauaki Primary schools will merge to form one school.
It will become a year 1-8 primary school, with the possibility of becoming a year 1-6 school in the future.
Education Minister Anne Tolley announced that Kawerau South School will remain and a kura kaupapa Maori will be established on the vacated grounds of Kawerau North School.
She said the reorganisation of schools in Kawerau will bring a much brighter future for education in the town, and raise achievement levels for students.
Tolley has also proposed merger of Kawerau Intermediate and Kawerau College, which would see a junior high school for years seven to ten, and a senior high school for years eleven to thirteen, as two separate campuses on the same site.
Tolley says she's still looking at community feedback and is yet to make a decision on the future structure of the senior schools.
Details of a consultation process will be announced soon, with any changes taking effect in 2013.
