The Kakapo has been declared Bird of the Year.
The world's heaviest and rarest parrot, hovering on the brink of extinction, received 578 votes in Forest and Bird's annual contest.
In the 1990s only 51 of the birds remained, but conservation efforts has since seen its numbers boosted to 90.
The Kakapo is also possibly the world's longest lived bird with a life expectancy of 90 years.
