Kaitaia police have confirmed Barbara Julian was attacked in her Matthews Avenue home and she died as a result of foul play.
The 70-year-old's body was found by a group of friends on Wednesday afternoon.
Detective Inspector Karen Malthus says a post mortem examination has been carried out, but they won't be releasing the results publicly anytime soon.
Malthus says because of investigative reasons and operational concerns no information can be released yet about what happened to Julian inside her house.
