A District Court judge has upheld Wanganui council's anti gang patch bylaw, leaving the mayor with a sense of vindication.

Michael Laws says it is a win for the good guys and he was always confident his anti gang patch bylaw would stand up to any legal test.

The ban on all gang related insignia from the CBD was passed in September last year.

Hells Angels member Bryan Vincent Moore was arrested for wearing a patch and the gang used the arrest as a test case for the bylaw. The case was brought before a judge in December and that judge has upheld the bylaw.

Laws says the decision should also silence the bylaw's critics.
