John Key shares limelight with tarantula

The Prime Minister has opened New Zealand's largest biological science research building with the help of a friend.

John Key got an up close and personal look at Gertrude, a Mexican red-kneed tarantula, before opening the new Canterbury University building.

"If you'd asked me when I put my hand up to be Prime Minister I'd have to put my hand out for a tarantula, I probably wouldn't of necessarily applied for the job, but anyway I did, I have and I survived," Key said.
