An artwork dashed off by Prime Minister John Key in just 30 seconds looks set to raise a large sum for charity.

The bidding for a doodle John Key did on Breakfast of a possible new flag for New Zealand has now passed $10,000.

The marker pen drawing on A4 paper is being auctioned by TVNZ on Trade Me for the charity Cure Kids. The PM gave his consent for the drawing to be auctioned for charity.

Key described his drawing as a "silver fern". Breakfast host Pippa Wetzell described it as a "lop-sided Christmas tree".

Following questions from bidders on Tuesday Key also agreed to host the winning bidder for morning tea. TVNZ also agreed for the winning bidder to have morning tea with Wetzell following a similar question.

The auction closes next Tuesday.
