An 18-year-old youth was arrested on Wednesday night after a Japanese tourist was held up at gunpoint in broad daylight.

The victim was one of a group of about 25 tourists on Itchen St, Oamaru, when he was confronted by a youth with a BB gun at 3:50pm, says Detective Sergeant Mike Ryder, of Oamaru police.

The youth took $10 from the tourist before fleeing in a blue car.

"It was only a BB gun, but it doesn't make it look any less real when it's pointed at you," Ryder told the Otago Daily Times.

The accused youth will appear in Oamaru District Court on Thursday accused of aggravated robbery.
