A cyclist who was killed by a train in Mount Manganui may have missed warnings as she was listening to music.

The 55-year-old, who has yet to be named, was hit by a goods train about 2.30pm Tuesday while crossing at a rail intersection on Matapihi Road and died instantly.

A witness told the New Zealand Herald the woman appeared to have been listening to an iPod, or similar device as she rode her bike.

Tauranga Senior Sergeant Tania Kura said it appeared the woman was distracted and did not see the train.

He said warnings were "well signposted" and the barrier arm down, forcing the woman to go around a pedestrian fence.
