Investigation launched after police car chase ends in crash

A lengthy chase which ended in a crash in Napier on Monday night will be investigated by police and the Independent Police Conduct Authority.

The crash happened about 9.30pm after police had pursued a vehicle for 15 minutes.

They wanted to the talk to the driver, a 35-year-old man, about a domestic-related incident in the city.

Inspector Paul Jermy, of police central communications, says the pursued vehicle crashed into a tree on Marine Parade, and although the driver did not suffer serious injuries, he was taken to hospital as a precaution after the crash.

He will be facing driving charges.
