Police say the body of a baby discovered in Christchurch is that of either a newborn or very young infant.

It was found at a boarding house in Opawa on Wednesday morning.

Neighbours say the two storey property has up to 12 people staying at a time, some of them foreigners.

Many of those returned home on Wednesday to find they had nowhere to sleep for the night as the property was cordoned off.

One neighbour says she frequently has noise problems with the house, and did as recently as the night before the police discovered the baby's body.

Police are releasing few details, except to say they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
