A "death threat email" is circulating in New Zealand in an attempt to extort money.
The Department of Internal Affairs has had several complaints from people who have received the threatening email.
The Anti-Spam Compliance Unit says the email comes from someone claiming to be a contract killer. It is signed by Abdulla Azzam, senior investigator Toni Demetriou said.
"He demands $5000 to prevent 'his boys' carrying out the killing and warns the recipient not to go to the police," said Demetriou.
"This is clearly a hoax scam designed to play on people's fears and extract money from them."
Demetriou said there was a similar scam circulating about five years ago.
There have been reports of the current "death threat" scam appearing in inboxes around the world.
Internal Affairs recommends recipients of spam emails submit a complaint to the department and then delete the offending material.
The department also has information on its website about scams
in operation.
