Police and the Department of Labour are investigating how a refuse worker was run over and killed by a reversing rubbish truck in South Auckland on Monday.

Willie Noble Nicholas, 29, was killed when he was struck by a vehicle in Gadsby Road, Mangere, shortly before midday.

The truck, owned by Manukau City Council contractor Alpha Refuse Collections, had pulled into a driveway on vacant land to allow the kerbside collection crew to visit the Gadsby Supermarket, Counties Manukau police serious crash unit Constable Steve Shaskey says.

The truck was reversing out of the driveway when Nicholas was killed.

The accident is being investigated by the Department of Labour and the police commercial vehicle investigation unit.
