Fox Glacier Guiding is looking for answers after a climbing accident left a tourist trapped under a chunk of ice for several hours.

The rescue operation involved the fire service, ambulance and alpine rescue team.

Guiding chief executive Rob Jewell says the man was airlifted to the Grey Base Hospital and has since been discharged.

The Czech national was caught in a rock fall during a guided trip on Fox Glacier and Jewell says they are pleased to hear their client is okay.

He has thanked emergency services for responding swiftly to the incident and says his company will be reviewing procedures to see if there is anything that can be learned.

Jewell says they will have a team debrief on their response to the incident and then begin an internal investigation into the circumstances that led to the accident.

In January, two Australian brothers were killed in an ice fall at the glacier. Ashish and Akshay Miranda walked beyond warning signs and were buried under tonnes of falling ice.
