Images of man sought over ATM scam released

Published: 3:38PM Friday March 30, 2012 Source: ONE News

Police have released images of a man captured on CCTV near two ATMs targeted in a skimming scam.

Three ATMs, and possible more, were compromised in the scam. They include an ATM in Parnell on February 4, one in Takapuna between February 20 - 22, and on February 24, and one in Howick on March 2.

Accounts of customers in Orewa, northern Auckland, have also been hacked.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Russ Bagley of the Auckland City District Financial Crime Unit said the value of the offending so far is around $1 million and rising, with all the money withdrawn overseas.

The images show a man wearing a bicycle helmet standing at the machines.

"We are working closely with the banks' own internal investigators to try and track the offenders and establish the full extent of the offending," Bagley said.

Police say anyone who knows the man or his whereabouts should call police on 09 302 6972 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
