A hunter who got lost in a forest made a large white cross in a clearing to help rescuers find him.

The 26-year-old Waikato man entered the Whirinaki Forest Park, south east of Murupara, on Saturday morning with a group of friends for a day hunt.

However, the alarm was raised on Sunday morning after he failed to return.

Rotorua Police Search & Rescue Squad members and LandSar volunteers spent yesterday searching the area surrounding the Whangatawhia hut.

A helicopter crew spotted the hunter in the bed of a stream north of the hut about 6.20pm yesterday.

In an effort to be found, Detective Sergeant John Wilson said the man had made the white cross and lit a fire when he saw the helicopter.

Wilson said the man was well, though hungry.
