A Tauranga hunter was critically injured when he was shot while hunting south of Taupo.
The 69-year-old was shot in the chest by another hunter with a high powered rifle about dusk on Wednesday at Hatepe, between Taupo and Turangi, Acting Sergeant Ross Humphrey of Taupo police says.
The man was spotlighting hunting for rabbits at the time.
The hunter who shot the man is helping police with inquiries and is "traumatised" by the incident, Humphrey says.
A decision has yet to be made on whether or not he will face charges.
The man was flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition by Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance about 11pm.
