A black car may hold the key to an armed robbery in west Auckland which netted three masked men thousands of dollars.

The three men held up an Armourguard van outside an ASB Bank branch at the Westgate shopping mall just before 5pm on Thursday.

They are still on the loose.

Police have appealed for any sightings of a black station wagon with tinted windows, which sped away from a stolen getaway car which the three robbers tried to torch in Lazurite Drive, Henderson.

At least two of the men were holding guns during the incident, however no shots were fired. One was armed with a shotgun.

Police said the robbery appears to have been a carefully planned heist.

"We would like anyone who has seen any suspicious activity in that area to contact us," said Detective Sergeant Pete Litherland.

Police want anyone with information to contact the Waitakere CIB.
