A hunt for armed robbers is continuing in Auckland after an Armourguard security van was held up last night.

The van was robbed near the Westgate Shopping Mall in Henderson, West Auckland, just before 5pm.

Police say a quantity of money was taken in what appears to have been a carefully planned heist.

ONE News was told by witnesses two of the men were armed and the van was doing a pick-up at the ASB Bank. No shots were fired.

A witness said the Armourguard staff were forced to hand over cash at gunpoint.

"I was working and I saw a couple of guys coming back from the carpark," Ivan Pitton said. "There was definitely a chopper up, I heard that, there were a few cops coming over within five to ten minutes ... as well as security."

But the offenders had fled and their getaway car was found burnt-out in a street in the nearby suburb of Massey.

Armourguard and bank staff have given statements to police and are said to be shaken.

By 11pm police were releasing no further information, but the three men had not been caught.
