It wasn't just those in Dunedin who had to deal with the impact of the snow as it ruined the travel plans of hundreds of southerners.
Parked up and going nowhere was the story of the day on Tuesday for dozens of southern truckies.
State Highway One was closed between Balclutha and Clinton.
With the Otago Southland hills under their heaviest dump for several years, and the snow flurries coming thick and fast, the graders were the most welcome sight on some very lonely roads.
But too much snow and not enough graders led to long frustrating delays for hundreds of motorists.
At Clinton, the queue stretched the length of the town and beyond.
"We have an appointment in Christchurch with a specialist tomorrow at lunchtime for my daughter and it would be nice to think we can get through," says Ross Bulling, a frustrated motorist.
As the hours dragged on, there was some very welcome Clinton hospitality, with a local offering motorists biscuits.
They're used to snow in the area but this was different.
"Usually we get a good dumping at night. But we don't usually get the snow coming during the day," says Ross Walton, a Clinton resident.
With feed in good supply, there aren't too many problems on the farm.
But the airport had a morning to forget with nearly 500 passengers affected, some missing overseas connections.
Canterbury gets off lightly
A light dusting of snow in parts of Canterbury proved more picturesque than problematic.
Along the Port Hills above Christchurch, people had a ball with the smattering of snow there.
But drivers weren't enjoying the white coating quite so much.
Although no roads were closed in the area, some icy spots were covered in grit to keep cars from sliding.
