A horse had to be cut from the back seat of a car after an accident in Taranaki that left a passenger badly injured.

The horse, one of two which collided with the car, has now been freed.

"The information I have is that the horse is now standing in a paddock," Marty Edghill, of central police communications said.

The accident was "bizarre," he said.

The stricken animal may yet be put down, as the extent of its injuries was not yet clear.

The car and two horses collided at the corner of Mangorei Rd and State Highway 3 near New Plymouth at 6.40am.

One person, believed to be a passenger in the car, was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital with serious injuries.

One of the horses died soon after the crash.

However the other horse ended up in the back seat of the car.

A vet was called to put it down. However they managed to help free the horse from the car.

It was not yet clear how badly hurt the horse was, or if it would have to be put down.

The horse's owner was at the accident scene, along with the Fire Service, police, and animal control officers.
